When you’re finished, come right back to this page to enter to win this week’s prize: your choice between Transcribe Anywhere’s General Transcription: Theory and Practice OR Legal Transcription:Theory and Practice LEVEL 1!

I had the privilege of working on the new updated Transcribe Anywhere website and upgraded course content with Janet Shaughnessy — creator and instructor of Transcribe Anywhere — and it is AWESOME. As a former student of her former course, I’m so excited to see the changes and resources the new courses have. If you’d like a closer look at what the courses are all about, check out my full review here.

What is transcription?

Simply put, transcription is taking audio and converting it to text. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, it’s actually not all that simple at all. Transcribing involves WAY more skill than just typing fast. To really excel at transcription, you need to demonstrate mastery of proper English grammar and punctuation. You MUST know the difference between their, there, and they’re; your and you’re; and how to properly punctuate the spoken word.

Again, sounds simple enough, right? Wrong. It sounds easy when you’re thinking about it in the context of writing an email, but when you’re listening to the spoken word, it’s an entirely different ball game.

For a quick example, check out this sample of audio (this is actually really good quality audio compared to others):

In reality, people speak differently than they write. The job of the transcriptionist is to get the audio down verbatim, meaning every. single. word. In order to make ^ that audio readable in written form, you’ve gotta know what you’re doing when it comes to grammar and punctuation. If using strict verbatim, a transcriber would turn ^ this into this:

Speaker:  Um, I’m not really sure. Like, it all happened really fast, and I’m not really sure how it all happened. I think, like, maybe — well, he was going really fast, and he was coming up on my right side. And I — I just don’t know what happened after that.

Can you see how this could get really complicated with punctuation, improper grammar use from the speaker, and sometimes bad audio? Yep. It takes training to do this and do it well!

As a legal transcriptionist, I have some experience with this line of work, and it’s definitely a fantastic way to make money from home.

So who hires transcriptionists?

A LOT of businesses hire transcriptionists. In fact, when I started, I couldn’t believe how many opportunities there were out there for transcribers!

As a legal transcriptionist, you can work for attorneys, digital court reporters, reporting firms, etc. You can transcribe legal correspondence, hearings, trials, depositions, examinations under oath, and much more.

As a general transcriptionist, you can work for bloggers, podcasters, insurance agencies, SEO experts, content strategists, business owners — the list goes on! Seriously. Where ever there is recorded audio, a transcriptionist usually isn’t far behind.

Is transcription a good option for busy moms?

I totally think so. For me, I do all of my transcribing while my kids are napping, after they go to bed in the evening, or when my husband is off work. This is a great way to supplement your income and breath life into your budget.

For moms of older, more independent children, this is a fantastic way to potentially earn a full-time income from home. I say this for one reason: Based on my experience, a transcriptionist needs a very quiet environment and the ability to focus solely on the audio at hand. That’s why I transcribe when my kids were asleep or when I have extra help. If you have older kiddos who can be left unsupervised for longer periods of time or a helping hand if you have young ones, you can increase your worked hours, which will subsequently increase your earning potential!

Think transcription might be for you?

  1. Thank you for the gracious giveaway offer…and the great information provided in your blog.

As an Army Veteran and single mother of three, I am desperately seeking a career change that will allow me to focus more on my children, and finally build my own business. I have a strong legal background and won a trophy for typing in high school :)…a skill that never left me. I enjoy transcription work and am ready to start this new endeavor.

    Thanks again,

    Gina

  2. I’ve been looking for opportunities to work from home so I can spend more time with my son. Enjoying your blog and giveaways!!

  3. I made a comment on the wrong post oops :/ lol. I am very excited about this giveaway and can’t thank you enough Katie for all the awesome inspiration you give to women. I have been researching transcribing and actually have been through a medical transcription course. I am eager to learn from Janet if I am chosen. Even if I don’t I do plan on taking her course once I can afford to but praying that I win this opportunity. I have my fingers crossed and do also wish all the ladies luck in this drawing. God’s blessings.

    ~ Laura ~

  4. Thanks, your site is very interesting and informative. Great giveaways and great introduction to good business ideas for moms.

I signed up for the Transcription giveaway. I have been hired by two transcription companies and realized I need additional training so I would love to win!

I will say that I was feeling a bit penalized in the ‘gaining extra entries’ category because I’m not so social media savvy yet, (no Twitter, Pinterest, or blogging) only Facebook. But still positive for the win!

    Thanks again!

    1. Hi, Gina! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the giveaway! Unfortunately, the software I use won’t allow for many bonus entries that aren’t related to social media. I agree, it’s quite a bummer for those who don’t do social media. 🙁 To encourage you, though, I have had winners in the past who only had one entry submitted, so it is possible! 🙂

  5. Changing “careers” after 30 years in accounting and office management. So excited to create my own business at home! What a great giveaway that will certainly help someone, (hopefully me 🙂 ), make their “mark” by working at home! Thank you! ~ KL

    1. You’re so welcome, Kristie! After 30 years in your current field, working from home will certainly be a big change — and one you’ll probably LOVE! Good luck! 🙂

  6. This is SO exciting. I completed the mini-course and just paid my fee for the General Transcription: Theory & Practice this morning. I’m working my up to legal transcription, in baby steps.. Then I got this email this afternoon and get to enter for a chance! Katie, I hope that you and Janet both know the impact you can have on others. I am becoming progressively more disabled, and will only be able to work out of my home for another year or so (max). This is transformational for some of your readers; thank you just doesn’t seem enough.

    1. April, thank you SO much for such an amazing comment!! People like you are exactly why I want to do these kinds of giveaways. I know how much of a blessing working from home has been for my family, and I want to be able to share the opportunity with others who might find it beneficial. I certainly wish you all the best! 🙂

  7. This is an exciting opportunity! I’m needing a change of pace in my working from home and this seems so perfect! I’m running into issues with my age of 49, getting hired, and I used to transcribe years ago, so this seems the perfect way to make it.

  8. Thank you for sharing these courses! I learned about Transcribe Anywhere from Crystal Paine a few months ago but I didn’t know about all the other avenues for working at home. Your personal reviews and testimonials have been enormously helpful.

  9. Yeah, like some others, it’s not easy to find the actual entry.

Can we please have step by step instructions or a huge ‘ENTER HERE’?

      1. Haha! So I’m going to take a minute and laugh at myself before I apologize profusely to everyone. I had accidentally linked the page to the main page. It’s all fixed now, so you should see this week’s giveaway info on this page. I’m SO sorry for driving everyone a little crazy today trying to find the form. You should be able to see it now. 🙂

  10. Can someone who has already entered tell me where exactly to “click” for the entry form? I dont see “instructions,” only “here’s the scoop.” This is the drawing I was most looking forward to and I really must be blind or something.

      1. SO sorry, Heather! I fixed the page. It was linked to the wrong page, leading everyone to the wrong place. I have fixed the issue. You should now be able to view the correct page with the entry form above. 🙂 My apologies!!

  11. Hi, Number 2 in the instructions say to fill out the form below. This comment form is the only form on the page and the words in red cannot be clicked on. So, I am not sure what the instructions mean, And I would love to win this prize!! Thank you!! Jackie

  12. These all look so promising! I’m starting over as a single, homeschooling mom to 4 and need to figure out how to make a living from home. Very timely blog!
